What Does John 3:16 Really Say?

This verse appears in public more than any other verse in scripture; sporting events, billboards, graffiti, etc.  It appears to be everywhere.  It is normally used to say that the God loves everyone but is that what John 3:16 and scripture really teach us?

Read John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life”.   The verse is very clear, it states that He “loved” the world, pass tense, not present  or future tense.  He loved it in the past and He sent His Son to redeem!  If He loves everyone then why does John 3:36 say the opposite, “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him”.

What is frighten about this situation is the extremes that people will go to change scripture to make it say what they want it to say.  An example is an article published by the Southern Baptist Convention in Nashville, Tennessee.  It is as follows:

   Think About This

God loves you.  He loves you so much

“that he gave his only begotten Son, that

whosoever believeth in him should not

perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16)

That is not what John 3:16 states!!  They changed loved (past tense) to loves (present tense).

Billy Graham has stated many times that John 3:16 is his favorite verse in scripture and that God loves everyone, He hates sin but loves the sinner.

The Lord loves the believer but I am still waiting for someone to show me one verse in scripture that states He loves everyone.
